Indonesia is a multicultural nation that boasts a diverse array of destinations to explore.Indonesia is a multicultural country with a wide variety of places to go and visit.
The definition of seeing Indonesia is impossible in one tour – the island of Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands and three different time zones. A realistic strategy would be to select 2 or 3 areas and dive in. The ten locations highlight the nation’s best practice.
In Java, volcanoes and ancient temples can be found.Volcanoes and ancient temples can be visited in Java.
1. Borobudur and Prambanan
Yogyakarta is close to two UNESCO World Heritage sites. Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple, a terra-cotta mandala; Prambanan meets it with towering Hindu spires. Both were constructed in the 9th century, and several decades apart.
2. Mount Bromo
A smoking cone within a large caldera – best viewed in the morning from the Sea of Sand viewpoint of Penanjakan. Cold at altitude – always have a jacket (most first timers are surprised).
3. Ijen Crater
The miners who work in the sulphur pits carry large baskets alongside a turquoise acid lake, and prior to dawn, the gas spills out and ignites with an electric blue flame. The hike is approximately two hours long; gas masks are available, and will be provided by the guides.
The Nusa Islands are part of Bali. The Nusa Islands are located in Bali.
4. Ubud
The cultural hub of Bali: the terraced rice fields of Tegalalang, the Sacred Monkey Forest, temple dances and a vibrant wellness scene. Be slightly away from the centre to avoid traffic.
5. Nusa Penida
40 minutes from Sanur by fast boat. The post-card image is of the cliff formation at Kelingking beach; manta rays congregate at Manta Point all year round. The roads are bumpy, so don’t travel by scooter, hire a car.
6. The Gili Islands
Three car-free islands in Lombok. Gili Trawangan is the social one, Gili Air is a balance, Gili Meno is for couples and quiet. There’s almost a certain guarantee of snorkelling with green sea turtles.
Northeast Indonesia: Wildlife and water.
7. Komodo National Park
The only land where you can find wild Komodo dragons. The three-bay viewpoint on Padar Island is also accessible by boat from Labuan Bajo, as is the Pink Beach. Liveaboards are better than day trips, two or three days worth.
8. Raja Ampat
The greatest coral reef variety of any place in the world. It takes effort and money to get there, and divers say it’s worth it every time — flights to Sorong and a ferry to get there.
Sumatera: Jungle and Highland Lakes.
9. Bukit Lawang
Hiking in the rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park where semi wild orangutan Sumatran can be seen regularly. Select operators who maintain an appropriate space from animals and do not approach or feed animals.
10. Lake Toba
The world’s largest volcanic lake, created by a super eruption about 74,000 years ago. In the center is Samosir Island, the heartland of the Batak people, with traditional houses that resemble boats and cool mountain air.
Planning Notes
When to Go
In most parts of the country, the dry season spans from April to October, but there are exceptions in Maluku and Papua. Heavy rain is experienced in December and January on the island of Java and Bali.
Getting Around
The domestic flights are cost-effective and available on a regular basis and are the only logical method between the main islands. For shorter distances ferries are used. Plan for buffers, as delays happen all the time.
Entry and Etiquette
Most countries have a visa on arrival program and/or an e-visa program, check current requirements before booking. Wear modest attire at mosques and temples, avoid the left hand when shaking hands.
One Date to Know
The Day of Silence (Nyepi) is a time when the entire island of Bali is closed for 24 hours in the spring. Work around it or embrace it.
Choose a geographical area, not a list. In Indonesia, it is better to be patient than having too much to do.
